Letter to the Editor: Dominguez Family Thanks Community for Support of Brandon
Sharol and Alphonso Dominguez, Kendall Park
In December, we learned that our youngest son, Brandon, has brain cancer. In that moment, our lives changed forever and we all began the fight to save Brandon’s life.
Everyday, this disease drains our emotional, physical and financial resources. At first, it seemed that we would face this on our own. Then, very quickly, the district schools and local businesses joined us in our battle. The money that has been contributed to Brandon’s medical fund has helped to defray the costs of gas, tolls and parking at Sloan Kettering in New York City and any of the medical bills that are not covered by insurance.
We are deeply grateful and incredibly moved by the compassion and generosity that we have experienced every day since hearing the devastating diagnosis. The support of this community has helped us to know that we are not alone in this fight.
We want to express our thanks to all of the South Brunswick Schools, the students and the staffs, for their financial support, for the meals and all the cards and good wishes that they continue to send. We are especially thankful to the Crossroads North Garden Club for planting a beautiful flower garden for Brandon to enjoy. Thanks to both Crossroads South and North for the money you raised. It just helps so much.
To the High School and the Wrestling Team, we express our gratitude for making Brandon the team mascot and for raising money for his medical fund. Brooks Crossing, Indian Fields, Dayton/Deans Schools, your efforts on our behalf have helped more than you can know.
We are forever thankful to Confectionately Yours for launching the efforts on Brandon’s behalf and for continuing to provide an oasis from the treatments for Brandon and our whole family. Buffalo Wild Wings, Tastee Subs and Innophos of Cranbury all held fund raisers in support of our son and we thank every one of you.
When our old car could no longer make the trip to NYC, KPS/Princeton Garage made it safe again. Later on, Brad Benson Auto gave our family a van that now safely carries us back and forth to treatments.
Several generous and kind companies contributed to the installation of an accessible bathroom in our home, which allows Brandon to be safe, comfortable and independent once again.
We owe special thanks to architect Susan Sheffmaker for her beautiful design and for overseeing the project. Several of our township employees expedited the permit process and then paid the permit fees for our family. Thank you so much.
Maxzam Tile of East Brunswick donated all of the beautiful tiles for the project and Aaron and Company of New Brunswick support us with special pricing on all the plumbing fixtures. Home Depot of South Brunswick donated the new vanity. And then the incredibly generous and talented craftsman of JOESAL construction remodeled the entire bathroom and made it accessible in just one week!
Without the support of all those who contributed to Brandon’s fund, and to all those who made it happen, we simply would not have had the time, energy or resources to build a safe, accessible bathroom for our son to use.
Greenbrook School, Brandon’s home school, has been a continuous source of support. There are always cards and special gifts, friends and visits, books to read, food for dinner and lots and lots of bears. These are constant signs for Brandon that he is remembered.
Brandon has 25 more weeks of grueling chemotherapy ahead of him. There will be countless trips to NYC. There is so much emotional and physical pain and so much uncertainty.
It is our hope that no parent, no family, ever has to experience what we are going through. But if it does happen, we also hope that a family who finds themselves in our position will also have the support that we have received from our community. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Sharol and Alphonso Dominguez, Kendall Park

God bless your family. May He guide the hands, hearts and minds of those who treat Brandon and give you all the strength to find laughter and good times throughout this trying time. Thankfully your needs are being met and you live in this wonderful community, within reach of the best medical facilities at a time when it is so needed. I wish you all the best, will keep you all in my prayers and hope that your family, especially Brandon, will be able to move forward in happiness with this time as a distant mmory.
