Fire Devastates Monmouth Junction Condo (911 Audio)

A dozen residents displaced after fire at Whispering Woods in Monmouth Junction.

An early morning fire on Sunday in the Whispering Woods Condominium complex heavily damaged a section of a building and left a dozen residents displaced.

The fire was reported at 5 a.m. in the 7100 building of Elm Court after a resident called 911 to report a fire in his home.

South Brunswick Police arrived at the scene and entered the burning unit to wake sleeping residents. In total, residents from 21 townhomes were evacuated. 

Monmouth Junction Fire Department Chief Brian Spahr took control of firefighting operations, as firefighters were met with a significant blaze on the third floor that spread through the roof of the complex.

It took approximately one hour for 60 firefighters to get the fire under control. First responders remained on scene until 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with one firefighter suffering a twisted ankle during efforts to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one section of the 7100 building, with heavy damage reported in 8 of the 21 units.

All of the displaced residents made arrangements to stay with family or friends. The South Brunswick Fire Safety Bureau ruled the cause of the blaze as accidental, police said.

The two-alarm fire brought the Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, and Kingston fire companies to the scene. In addition, the Jamesburg, Brookview, Plainsboro, North Brunswick #2, and Little Rocky Hill fire companies also responded. The Monmouth Junction First Aid, Kendall Park First Aid Squad, and South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management also assisted.
