There were two mass services at St. Augustine's Sunday, one in the church and another in the gymnasium at the adjacent school to accommodate the large holiday crowd.

Shortly before 1 p.m. during services in the gymnasium, one of the individuals was standing in line for Communion when the other man came up behind him, according to police. A quick physical altercation then occurred, with one man headbutting the other, before both of them left the church, police said.

An officer working the traffic detail outside the church on Henderson Road was then approached by one of the men who said he had just been assaulted during mass. The other man involved in the fight went to a nearby business and called police.

One of the men suffered a cut lip and the second man had a bruise, but neither required medical treatment at the scene, police said. Both men were advised how to file criminal complaints in municipal court, but no complaints were immediately filed.

Police are not releasing the identities of the men involved in the altercation at this time.
