A Kendall Park man seriously injured after his car struck a tree on Route 1 this morning has been charged with drunk driving.

At 6:07 a.m., Michael Vincent, 41, was headed north in a 1992 Dodge Probe on Route 1 near Executive Drive when his vehicle left the roadway, according to police. Officer Gary Holsten determined that the rear tire on Vincent’s vehicle became flat as he was driving. Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan said Vincent drove for a period of time before he lost control of his vehicle and went off the road. 

The car then became airborne and struck a tree just off the shoulder of Route 1, according to police. Vincent was removed from his car by the Monmouth Junction Fire Department, who used the Jaws of Life to extricate him after he was trapped for about 30 minutes.

Vincent was transported by paramedics and South Brunswick EMS workers to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he is listed in fair condition. Vincent suffered a broken ankle and a head laceration. 

One northbound lane of Route 1 was closed for about ninety minutes after the crash. The southbound lane of Route 1 also experienced heavy delays during the morning rush hour.

A 41-year-old South Brunswick man was seriously injured this morning after his car struck a tree on Route 1.

At 6:07 a.m., the victim was headed north on Route 1 when his car left the roadway for unknown reasons, according to police. The vehicle became airborne and struck several trees near the Deans Lane intersection, said police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes before the Monmouth Junction Fire Department was able to extricate him using the Jaws of Life. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, Sgt. Ryan said.

Route 1 was closed to one lane for about one hour and heavy traffic delays were reported during the morning rush hour.
