Buzzer Beater Sends SBHS Girls Basketball to GMC Final
Vikings will attempt to win their first GMC Tournament title since 1976.
The South Brunswick High School girls basketball team earned its way to the GMC Final for the first time in over 30 years in dramatic fashion.
Ashley DeGroff hit a buzzer beater as time expired to give South Brunswick a 42-41 win over Piscataway last night at SBHS. The win sends the Vikings to their first appearance in the GMC Tournament final since 1976, when SBHS won the last of two straight titles.
Danielle Padovano led the way with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. DeGroff added 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Kelly O'Brien chipped in 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings.
With about six seconds left and down by one point, Padovano grabbed a rebound, took it up the court and got the ball to DeGroff, who scored from inside the paint as the clock ran out.
In attempting to win their first title since the 70's, the Vikings will have to go through North Brunswick, who defeated Bishop Ahr 53-51.
The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Rutgers University.
