UPDATE: Animal Sacrifice Reported on Dey Road
Islamic group reportedly sacrificing goats near Dey Farm as part of religious ceremony.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- An unidentified Islamic group sacrificed goats as part of a religious ritual Friday morning.
Nearly 100 people from the group were reportedly sacrificing goats on Dey Road near Dey Farms as part of the Eid-Ul-Adha holiday, according to one person in attendance who declined to be identified.
"This is part of a religious holiday, part of which requires an animal sacrifice," said a young male in attendance who declined give his name.
Police were called to the scene by a passing motorist, with intial reports indicating a connection to the occult.
"There is a large penned area with goats inside where people are apparently chasing the goats around with a stick before bringing them around to be slaughtered," said police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan. "We're still sorting things out, but it appears to be some kind of religious ceremony."
Sgt. Ryan said the group obtained a permit from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture to perform the ceremony. The ASPCA told police that if a permit had been obtained then the group was allowed to perform the ritual. Police said the group is not connected to the Islamic Society of Central Jersey.
"We're working with the Department of Agriculture to determine if this type of activity is allowed," Sgt. Ryan said.
Eid-Ul-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," commemorates Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to God, before God intervenes and gives him a ram (sheep) to sacrifice in Ishmael's place, according to www.whyislam.org.
The holiday is one of two major festivals celebrated by over one billion Muslims worldwide. The holiday involves Muslims offering special prayers and sacrificing animals, whose meat is then distributed to the poor and the needy, according to www.whyislam.org.
Sgt. Ryan said the group had performed the ritual at the location on Dey Road for the previous three years. The ritual involves people paying to kill a goat before bringing it home to be prepared in a certain way. It was not immediately clear how many goats were slaughtered.

Holidays are supposed to be joyous times, but for animals, they are often the worst of times no matter what religion is celebrating the holiday. During the Muslim holy days of Eid al-Adha, millions of animals, including camels, lambs, goats, and cows, had their throats cut in memory of Abraham's sacrifice of a sheep.
Goats legs are tied up and their rear legs roped together so they can hardly stand, and their mouths are often tied shut. Surrounded by a throng of onlookers, the terrified animals are held down with ropes while someone plunges a knife into their throat. Braying and thrashing in pain, they slowly bleed to death.
Happy Holidays! How can the police and health department allow this torture in our town?

I guess you never grew up on or near a farm, have you? When we used to visit cousins out on the farm, they would take a sheep and, while the sheep is just standing there, stick a knife into its juglar and let it bleed out. The sheep doesn't feel the pain evidence nby it just standing there until it passes out. Then we skin it and have lamb for din-din

You should understand the rules before you spew your ignorance. In Islam, it is actually REQUIRED that the animal cannot see the knife and that the knife must be completely sharpened so that an animal is not tortured at all. Torture is how animals are treated before you get your Burger King/McDonalds....make sure you learn the facts!

Fact check: Abraham's son whose sacrifice was deflected by the hand of God was Isaac, not Ishmael. Ishmael was the son Abraham's concubine Hagar, who, according to Biblical legend, was banished into the desert and became the father of the Arab peoples.

Muslims do not agree with that -- they believe Hagar was also his wife and it was in fact, Ishmael that was to be sacrificed when God deflected his hand. In its stead, God instructed him to sacrifice the lamb. That is a Muslim fact.

How many of you people who are so "appalled" by this are meat eaters? Just because it's different than Judeo-Christian norms doesn't mean that it should be shunned or ridiculed. These folks aren't just killing the goats to kill them. They will eat them. And they'll probably eat more of the animal than you "normal" aka white people do when you eat a chicken or a steak.
Let me ask you all this...how would you classify having turkey at Thanksgiving, or a Christmas ham? You're sacrificing a bird to celebrate a day that the Puritans came to the New World to be able to practice freedom of religion. How bout that?

I can't even imagine it's an issue.
Most people are meat eaters and some of the conditions animals for meat are raised in, are appalling. So is their death. You don't want to know what goes on in slaughter houses, my friend.
So these people kill the animal in a religious ritual...and the meat is consumed. I cannot see that it's a huge issue. The animal suffers no more than Kosher kills.
Look into how animals are killed when Kosher rituals are observed.
Personally, I'm not a religionist of any type, but if the animal is not truly tortured, and not raised in abusive conditions, why is this an issue?
The meat is not wasted, it is eaten.

Tom, there is a meat processing facility by my home. It processes wild kills, such as dear and bear. I can promise you, bow hunting is about as ugly as letting an animal bleed out by slitting its throat. In fact, sometimes, the hunters miss. Not pretty.
So when you use an example of "Christians chopping" up meat, to juxtapose to the Muslims who rather humanely kill these animals and consume them, it just seems a little dishonest.
Hunting is legal here. Farms where owners kill their own livestock is legal. Why is this such an issue? Because there is religious significance?
It is true, US christians don't kill animals for sacrifice, but in the "holy land" there are christian sects that do still practice sacrifical killing of animals (goats).
It still goes on outside of the Muslim religion.
Ken

alliemichelle

Tom, you mean people can't pray anywhere, even in school?
Praying is an act between an individual and God.
Last time I prayed, I did so without bothering anyone else or making it a show... and no one was harmed with the act being respectful of others who may not care to watch or participate in my ritual.
Prayer is not banned in public school, it's just no longer a requirement that all students participate or observe it.
I'm quite sure religious schools are allowed to hold mass prayers, however.

"Animal sacrifice ritual," really thats the headline?
Wow! This is a poorly reported story, Davey James should be extremely ashamed of himself for writing it in such a biased manner. He is clearly trying to to raise hate towards Muslims. Why?
First lets realize that these goats exist on a farm solely so someone can buy and eat them. Second they arent being tortured, I'm pretty sure being chased around with a stick is commonly called herding. Finally, they are probably being killed and bled out using the same techniques as kosher animals, the way some religions believe God intended.
There are some really dumb people commenting here.

Perhaps it's me, but I don't see any difference in doing what they are doing and, as per tradition, giving the meat to poorer people, as the law dictates. We eat lamb on Easter, yet someone else slaughters it. What's the difference? At least they give the meat to the hungry. We just show down and ask for more mint jelly for our 'Pascal Lamb.' There are also laws, like in Judaism, on how an animal is to be sacrificed, in a way that causes the least amount of distress to the animal, unlike we, who buy meat, knowing the conditions of the slaughter houses throughout the USA, which we all know are terrible. So, a goat is killed and the meat is eaten. Is this different from killing a deer and eating it? If they had license to do so, for, as so many AMericans are screaming about these says, their right to religion, I see no problem in what they were/are doing. America needs to be a bit, including myself, as I am an American, a Roman Catholic American, introspective and begin to look at our own behaviors before seeking out others to condemn. Remember...'ye who hast not sinned, cast the first stone'...yet we Americans have no problem casting stones, and condemning others, while totally blowing off our own transgressions. Always looking for an out, we are, and it's not a pretty sight.

I am a Muslim and I was there today. We sacrifice to honor our Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham) test by God to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael). This is stated in our book the Quran (Koran), not the Bible. We are not violently tortuing the animals. In our law ( the Shariah) the animal can't see the knife and is killed quickly with one swipe of a knife. I know this because I did it and the animal died quickly. If you don't like Islam, then fine but that doesn't mean you can condemn our practices as cruel because yo guys do the same things to hunt by shooting and most if the time the animal survives and is feeling pain. So look at yourselves first b4 correcting us, because I know what we are doing as Muslims to please our God.
